Chin Implants – Explained by Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Campbell of Quintessa in Milwaukee, WI
Dr. Andrew Campbell
Patients with a weak chin often have disharmony in their face. In other words, everything doesn’t seem to match. So frequently, patients will be seeing me for a rhinoplasty consult because their nose is a little bit too large, but what also creates a large nose, at least in appearance, can be a weak chin. So, while we’re discussing making their nose have better harmony with the rest of their face, we’re frequently also discussing placing a chin implant, so that their entire face has better harmony. Not only their upper third, their lower third, but then the nose and they all go together.
In essence, a chin implant can make their nose look better. So frequently, we’ll put these things together. And then on the other hand, we have patients who simply have a weak chin, their nose has good harmony, and all we need to do is place a chin implant, and now, their whole face has better harmony. They look better, they look more attractive. These are easily placed in the office if they’re a standalone procedure, downtime is virtually minimal, stitches come out in about a week, the scar is virtually invisible. Very little risk and these things last a lifetime. So, they’re a wonderful either adjunct to another procedure like a rhinoplasty or as a standalone procedure, just to make the face have better proportion.
