Scar Revision overview
Facial scars can leave permanent reminders of past trauma, cancer or adolescent acne. Once a scar is created it is impossible to remove it without creating a new incision and a subsequent scar. However, there are scar revision techniques to improve scar appearance and to make them less noticeable to the casual observer. Laser resurfacing can also be used to smooth out raised edges and help with pigmentation differences. Our doctors have experience with a geometric broken line and other scar revision techniques to help people see you and not your scar.
Am I a good candidate for Scar Revision?
Ideal scar revision candidates are healthy men and women who desire improvements in the following:
- Hypopigmented scars
- Depressed scars
- Scars crossing facial units
Preparing for your procedure
You should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to your scar revision treatment to decrease the risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.
Our technique
Scar revision may involve several stages. The primary stage includes excision of the old scar and reorienting the scar to be less noticeable. Our doctors will close the incision in multiple layers to ensure it heals with as fine of a line as possible. If a second stage is necessary, this may involve laser resurfacing to smooth out any transitions and pigmentation differences.
Scar Revision aftercare
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in the office. You may have some bruising and swelling that will subside in 24-72 hours. Head elevation and icing can help minimize bruising and swelling. Most people have minimal pain. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.
