CoolSculpting: How It Works & What to Expect
- On average, one treatment session takes 35-75 minutes
- Most patients will see results two months after treatment
How does CoolSculpting work?
When a new patient comes in for a CoolSculpting treatment, they’ll usually ask, “Does it hurt?” The short answer is no. The best way to describe what CoolSculpting feels like is a vacuum suctioning up tissue into a cup. The fat-freezing aspect feels similar to having a very cold ice pack applied to the body. Once the CoolSculpting applicator is on the tissue, it will reach a temperature that is safe for the body, but cold enough to kill the fat cells.
Every person is born with a certain number of fat cells that grow until he or she reaches adolescence. After that, the fat cells are technically done growing. As you gain or lose weight, the fat cells just get larger or smaller. When we freeze these fat cells with CoolSculpting, the fat cells die off and cannot grow back, leaving you with permanent results.
How amazing is that?
The CoolSculpting procedure safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are crystalized (frozen), then die. Every application to each patient’s area of concern will reduce the area 20% to 25%. That said, we typically recommend patients have one to two treatments done per area. We carry a large number of applicators for different areas on the body and treatments can range from 35 to 75 minutes each.
Over time, your body naturally metabolizes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted figure that you will love for years to come.
Does CoolSculpting Work on Everyone?
CoolSculpting works great on any patient who is self-conscious about his or her figure and still not seeing desired results no matter how many healthy lifestyle choices have been made.
Despite excessive diet and exercise, there are some areas of the body that are simply more stubborn than others. These target areas can vary from person to person, but CoolSculpting has proven to be one of the best non-surgical fat reduction treatments available.
Below are the most common areas of the body that can benefit from CoolScupting:
- Double chin and neck
- Upper arms and under arms
- Male breast tissue
- Back/bra fat
- Lower stomach or “pudge”
- Middle section/abdomen
- Love handles
- Inner and outer thighs
CoolSculpting has come out with more and more applicators throughout the years to better help problem areas. At Quintessa, we offer patients two additional CoolSculpting options to treat more specific target areas of the body:
The CoolSculpting CoolMini procedure is specifically designed for the double chin while the CoolAdvantage Petite treats the upper arms. CoolSculpting treatment also comes with many unexpected benefits that you might not have initially considered.
Our highly trained CoolSculpting clinicians will help you choose the best applicator for your unique needs.
What Can I Expect?
Whether it’s a free consultation or the procedure itself, our goal is to ensure all patients are comfortable and fully understand the CoolSculpting process. Quintessa’s warm and inviting atmosphere is often a pleasant surprise as most patients come in expecting the typical hospital environment with bright white lights and scary medical devices surrounding the room.
Our CoolSculpting process begins with a one-on-one consultation where you’ll meet one of our certified CoolSculpting experts. Our experienced clinicians will take the time to answer all your questions and discuss a holistic approach to reaching your body contouring goals. Together, we’ll assess your body from different angles and identify the specific areas where you want to permanently eliminate fat. During this time, you will also get a chance to browse a wide range of CoolSculpting before and after photos so you can see results firsthand from patients who may have had similar challenges and goals.
The consultation process is intended to be informative and personalized. If there’s an alternative procedure that might give you results that better align with your goals, we’ll discuss those options with you and guide you in a best-fit direction.
When undergoing CoolSculpting treatment, patients can expect a non-invasive procedure that’s quick, easy, and painless with no downtime at all.

Should I get liposuction or CoolSculpting?
Both treatments offer permanent fat cell reduction, but the best option for you depends on your body sculpting goals and how close you are to your ideal weight. If you are more than 20 pounds over your ideal weight, then liposuction may be the better solution for you.
Does CoolSculpting work on belly fat?
CoolSculpting can directly target belly fat, freezing the fat cells until they crystallize and die off. When treatment is overlapped on both sides of the stomach, it allows us to really attack the lower part of the abdomen for optimal results.
Does CoolSculpting tighten the skin?
Although CoolSculpting is not technically FDA-cleared for skin tightening, it’s certainly a viable option for tightening the skin of patients both young and old.
Can CoolSculpting get rid of love handles?
The love handles (flanks) are a very common CoolSculpting target area for women seeking a true hourglass shape. Treating the flanks with CoolSculpting can help you achieve the slimmer look you’ve always wanted, permanently freezing unwanted fat cells along the way.
Is EMSculpt the same as CoolSculpting?
Both treatments are non-surgical but ultimately differ in how they sculpt the body. While CoolSculpting is strictly a non-invasive fat reduction treatment, EMSculpt is a non-invasive treatment specifically designed to induce powerful muscle contractions.
