What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, and volume of the breasts. During the surgery, breast implants are inserted either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscles to achieve the desired fullness and projection.
This procedure is commonly sought by individuals looking to improve their breast appearance, increase self-confidence, restore breast volume lost due to weight loss or pregnancy, or achieve better symmetry between the breasts. Breast augmentation surgery is a safe and popular option, with a variety of implant types and sizes available. We offer both saline and silicone implants that will help you determine the look you desire to obtain. If you are more interested in an all-natural augmentation, fat grafting can also be an option.

Prepping for the Procedure
As with any procedure, you should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.
Types of Implants
There are several different techniques and options available for breast augmentation surgery. Our doctors will discuss your goals and preferences and help you decide what the best option is for you. There are two main categories of breast implants: saline and silicone. The pros and cons of each will be extensively reviewed and you will have an opportunity to feel and see them during your consultation.
Silicone implants come in several different varieties depending on how “cohesive” they are. Sometimes people refer to the highly cohesive implants as the “Gummy Bear” implants. Silicone implants tend to feel and look more natural but are more expensive and more difficult to detect rupture.
Saline implants are filled with saline (saltwater) at the time of the surgery and can be tailored more specifically. However, saline tend to be firmer and require more breast tissue to ensure they appear natural.

Incision Sites

There are two commonly used incision site options, peri-areolar and inframammary fold. Both incisions can be used to place the implant above or below the muscle.
Recovery and Aftercare
After the breast augmentation surgery, you can expect to take pain medicine for 1-3 days and then over-the-counter pain relievers for another 1-3 days. However, some patients may need no pain medicine at all.
It is normal to feel a slightly uncomfortable sense of tightness or swelling around the breast area, but most patients report that this feeling goes away within a week.
You will be placed in a bra at the end of the procedure. You may remove this and shower after 24 hours. It’s important to use a gentile compression bra during the first 1-2 weeks and stronger bra support when you start doing activities for the first 3 months. We recommend these compression bras for the first few weeks.
You should avoid underwire bras for at least 6 weeks. You may have some numbness and hypersensitivity of the breast. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Average recovery time is 5-7 days.
Possible Risks
While breast augmentation surgery can yield beautiful results, it’s essential to be informed of potential risks and complications. These can include bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. Capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue forms around the implant and tightens, may occur. Implants may also rupture or leak, leading to additional surgery. In rare cases, asymmetry, wrinkling, or rippling of the breasts may develop.
To minimize these risks, it’s crucial to choose a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon that you trust (like Dr. Butz), follow post-operative care instructions diligently, and communicate openly about any concerns throughout the process.
At Quintessa, it is rare to see the above risks in our patients. Dr. Butz’s education, training, and experience have taught him well to minimze these risks and produce beautiful results.

Breast augmentation or breast implants are the most requested procedure, but there are many types to choose from based on your desired aesthetic goals. Each surgery offers a different kind of solution for a woman who wants to achieve her ideal look — but all procedures have natural-looking outcomes.
Yes! This may sound surprising, but the most common cosmetic surgery is performed on our breasts. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently published a report showing more than 310,000 women and teenagers in the United States underwent surgery to have their breasts enlarged with silicone or saline implants. It’s been the number one procedure since 2006.
