Tummy Tuck and Drainless Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a procedure that removes excess lower abdominal fat and skin to provide a tighter and more aesthetically pleasing contour. Pregnancy can cause rectus diastasis, where the six pack muscles are stretched apart and it creates a looser abdominal wall. Repairing the diastasis will stabilize the abdominal wall and tighten the abdominal wall. What can I expect after a tummy tuck?
  • A compression garment will be in place for the first 6-8 weeks after the procedure
  • You may have some numbness, tightness and pulling of the abdomen for several weeks – this will improve in time
  • Avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk

Pregnancy and weight fluctuations put a strain on your abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis), resulting in stretch marks, loose skin and unflattering bulges. An abdominoplasty, also known as a “tummy tuck”, can help give you back the body you once cherished. Quintessa is also proud to be among the first in Wisconsin to offer a “drainless tummy tuck.”

During abdominoplasty procedures, Dr. Daniel Butz will surgically remove excess skin and fat deposits, then tighten the muscles in your abdomen which dramatically improve your figure. The results you will see include a smoother, flatter abdomen. If you are having concerns about your appearance and feel that a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, may be right for you, please contact us for your discreet consultation and share your story with us today.

Ideal Tummy Tuck Candidates

Ideal candidates are healthy men and women who desire improvements in the following:

  • Breast ptosis and volume loss
  • Excess abdominal skin and fat
  • Abdominal wall diastasis related to pregnancy
  • Stretch Marks

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

The incisions are frequently a common source of concern for patients. Our doctors are aware of this and only makes the scar as long as necessary. There are mini or short scar abdominoplasty when there is less abdominal tissue that needs to be removed. Dr. Butz will carefully close the scar and hide it in the underwear line.  Liposuction is commonly combined with the abdominoplasty to provide circumferential contour improvements.

Preparing for your Procedure

As with any procedure, you should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.

Abdominoplasty Technique

The abdominoplasty incision is determined by Dr. Butz based on the amount of excess skin and fat tissue. He will make sure it is with in your underwear line to ensure it is well hidden. Our doctors will discuss the details of the procedure with you during the consultation. Liposuction is used to address the flanks to ensure the abdominal contour is properly sculpted.

There are several different techniques and options available for breast augmentation or ptosis correction. Our doctors will discuss your goals and preferences and help you decide what the best option is for you.

Drainless Tummy Tuck Technique

A new trend among plastic surgeons is what’s called a drainless tummy tuck. It is a combination of a traditional tummy tuck, muscle repair and liposuction procedure — with the use of a special suturing technique that eliminates the need for post-surgical drains!

This provides all the benefits of a traditional tummy tuck because excess fat, loose skin and muscle laxity can be addressed at the same time without the use of drains.

The drainless tummy tuck also offers a less complicated recovery period. Fluid output doesn’t need to be monitored and drains do not need to placed, emptied, or removed. Recovery also tends to be shorter and the scars heal very smoothly.

Not everyone is a good candidate for a drainless tummy tuck and Dr. Butz will discuss if this is a good option for you.

Postoperative Planning

The abdominoplasty is performed in an accredited surgery center with the assistance of an anesthesiologist.  An overnight stay is an option and sometimes a good idea. A compression garment will be in place for the first 6-8 weeks after the procedure. Dr. Butz may leave two drains in place to help reduce the amount of swelling. Our doctors do perform “drainless” abdominoplasty in select patients.

You may have some numbness, tightness and pulling of the abdomen for several weeks to months. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. If you have small children at home, you may need to plan on having someone around to help. We always encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Realself Q&A

How many sizes do you lose with a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery is not a weight loss procedure. The amount of actual fat/skin that is removed varies from patient to patient but the average is probably around 5 lbs. There is typically a significant improvement in abdominal contour and waist size. And many patients that have a severe diastasis are able to be more active afterwards and can improve their ability to lose additional weight if desired.

How long does it take for tummy tuck swelling to go down?

Swelling after tummy tuck surgery resolves in multiple stages. The majority of the swelling subsides by 3-4 weeks. However, over the next several months more subtle swelling resolution will occur. By 6 months, most patients can expect to be at their final result. Abdominal liposuction can increase the amount of swelling you have early on, but it is generally worth it for an improved final outcome.

How long after tummy tuck surgery do I wear a compression garment or binder?

I typically have my patients wear a binder for 1-2 weeks and then transition to more comfortable spanx or a milder compression for 5-6 weeks. There are a lot of different opinions about this so it's best to follow your surgeon's recommendations.
