Is Breast Augmentation Right for Me?

Choosing to undergo breast augmentation is a deeply personal choice influenced by various considerations. Our team is here to guide you through each step, ensuring you feel confident and comfortable with your decision.

Breast augmentation is not always the right choice for everyone, and not everyone needs breast implants. However, most women are very satisfied with the outcome. In one study, 98% of women said the results of breast augmentation met or exceeded their expectations, with 92% reporting improved self-esteem and 64% saying it had given them an improved quality of life.

The Dream Team for Breast Augmentation in Wisconsin

Breast implant surgery has never been safer due to advancements in implant technology and a significant reduction in leakage incidents.

Moreover, the risk of surgical complications has decreased, thanks to new techniques and strategies. The “No Touch” technique has dramatically reduced the risk of capsular contraction. And at Quintessa, we can provide Ultrasound screening to assess the integrity of the breast implants. Women can now enjoy greater peace of mind, knowing the FDA is diligently ensuring the safety of breast implants and promoting comprehensive patient education.

What Are the Different Types of Breast Augmentation Surgeries

Breast enhancement surgery can involve a standard augmentation or a combination approach depending on your needs and goals.

When performing breast augmentation procedures in Delafield, our Quintessa surgeons are on the leading edge of the industry’s highest standards for creating long-lasting, beautiful results.

Quintessa provides the following combination procedures:

Standard breast augmentation

A standard breast augmentation involves placing an implant below the muscle or breast tissue to add volume and shape to the breast. This is ideal for patients who have no concerns about the position of their breast or skin laxity.

Breast Augmentation with Lift

A breast augmentation with lift procedure is the perfect enhancement for sagging breasts and patients looking to treat low nipple position. This involves utilizing the implant to restore and enhance volume while the lift provides improved nipple position and eliminates loose sagging skin.

Breast Augmentation with Fat

This method involves liposuction to remove fat from one part of your body—such as the belly, flanks, back, or thighs—and injecting it into the breasts.

Breast fat transfer is ideal for those seeking a modest increase in breast size. This technique leverages your body’s natural fat, potentially offering a more natural aesthetic. Typically, you can expect to get a ½ cup size increase in one stage.

Mommy Makeover Surgery

Reclaim your body after pregnancy with a Mommy Makeover – it’s more than just a procedure; it’s a complete rejuvenation.

Originally centered around breast enhancements and tummy tucks, today’s Mommy Makeover has expanded to encompass a comprehensive body revival, incorporating innovative 360 circumferential liposuction and a tailored lift of the buttocks to meet your aesthetic goals.

Types of implants

There are a number of different options to consider when choosing your breast implant. This will be discussed at length during your consultation.

The implant fill material: Saline vs Silicone

Saline Implants

Saline implants are a silicone shell that are filled with sterile salt water. If they rupture the saline is safely absorbed by the body. Depending on how much breast tissue you have, they tend to be more palpable. Saline implants are less expensive but rupture at a higher rate.

Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants have evolved over the past several decades. At Quintessa, we primarily use the 4th and 5th generation “form stable” gummy bear implants. They have a silicone shell that are filled with different degrees of cross linked silicone gel.

The implant profile:

Implant shape varies—from low, low plus, moderate, to full and extra full profiles. This terminology can vary depending on the manufacturer. But the profile is determined by your chest width and the CC volume you want. Your surgeon will help decide which profile will fit you best based on your goals and anatomy

The implant size:

We measure implant size by cubic centimeters (CC). We offer a three-step sizing process to help you find the right size for your goals. First, we take biometric measurements, then we have you try on sizers to see what feels right on your frame. Lastly, we offer 3D simulation so you can visualize your result.

Implant surfaces
  • Smooth shelled implants offer the softest feel and more natural-looking movement.
  • Textured shelled implants are designed to bond with scar tissue to stay in place, reducing movement within the breast. These have fallen out of favor due to a rare complication called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma. This isn’t unique to breast implants but can be associated with textured medical devices.

Are Breast Implants Placed Above or Below the Muscle?

There are two common placement options for the implants – above or below the muscle. Your surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of each of these locations so you can choose what’s best for you.

Above the muscle or subfascial augmentation

Above the muscle (subfascial) breast augmentation has gained popularity with the advancement of modern silicone implant technology, which now enables natural-looking results in this placement plane. Internal bra mesh is often used to provide additional tissue support and limit stretch.

This approach positions the implant between the breast tissue and the pectoralis major muscle (or just beneath the fascia covering the muscle). While historically this placement carried a higher risk of implant visibility and rippling, particularly in patients with minimal breast tissue, newer implant designs have significantly reduced these concerns.

The primary advantages of this technique include:

  • Faster recovery time compared to submuscular placement
  • No disruption of the pectoralis muscle function
  • Absence of post-operative chest workout restrictions
  • More direct control over implant positioning
  • No risk of animation deformity (visible implant movement during chest muscle contraction)

Ideal candidates typically have adequate natural breast tissue to provide sufficient coverage over the implant. Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy to determine if this placement option is suitable for your specific goals and body type.

Below the muscle or dual-plane augmentation

The dual-plane technique places the implant partially beneath the pectoralis major muscle, with a strategic release of the muscle’s lower attachment. This creates a “dual plane” where the upper portion of the implant is covered by muscle while the lower portion is covered only by breast tissue.

This placement method offers several significant benefits:

  • Enhanced upper pole coverage, providing a more natural-looking transition from chest to breast
  • Reduced risk of visible implant edges, particularly in the upper breast area
  • Decreased likelihood of rippling, especially beneficial for patients with minimal natural breast tissue
  • Lower incidence of capsular contracture compared to complete above-muscle placement

The primary consideration with dual plane placement is the potential for animation deformity—visible movement or distortion of the breast when the pectoral muscle contracts. However, with modern surgical techniques, this effect is typically minimal and often only noticeable during specific chest muscle movements.

The suitability of this technique depends on your individual anatomy, desired implant size, and aesthetic goals. We will evaluate these factors comprehensively during your consultation to determine the optimal placement approach for your unique circumstances.

What is Internal Bra Mesh?

Internal bra mesh is an advanced technique used during breast augmentation or breast lift procedures to provide internal support and long-lasting shape. Made from dissolvable materials, the mesh acts like an internal scaffold, reinforcing breast tissue as your body heals. Over time, it’s naturally absorbed, leaving behind a stronger layer of supportive scar tissue. This added structure helps prevent sagging or implant displacement, offering more durable, natural-looking results.

Before deciding on breast augmentation in Milwaukee, It’s important to engage with a board-certified plastic surgeon to explore these procedures, understanding the specific advantages, potential risks, and FDA guidelines for each, ensuring the choice aligns with your personal goals and safety considerations.

Our Three Step Process

1-
Pre-Consultation

Before your consultation, we encourage you to explore our gallery of before and after breast augmentation photos. This can allow to see various examples and choose “wish pictures” to reference during your consultation.

We also provide a pre-consultation video that reviews all available options and goes over safety considerations in detail.

Consultation / Examination

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your specific goals and concerns, view your wish pictures, and answer any questions you might have. Our surgeons perform an examination to determine if you need a breast lift or if there are any asymmetries to consider. This is when you’ll get to try on sizers and see the 3D simulation of potential results.

We don’t expect you to commit to a size during the consultation.

Pre-surgery visit

We schedule a pre-surgery visit to review preoperative and post operative instructions, go over safety considerations and sign consent forms, reviewed prescription medications and to review sizing options and determine your final implant size.

2-
Recovery and Aftercare

After the breast augmentation surgery, you can expect to take pain medicine for 1-3 days and then over-the-counter pain relievers for another 1-3 days. However, some patients may need no pain medicine at all.

It is normal to feel a slightly uncomfortable sense of tightness or swelling around the breast area, but most patients report that this feeling goes away within a week.

You will be placed in a bra at the end of the procedure. You may remove this and shower after 24 hours. It’s important to use a gentle compression bra during the first six weeks and stronger bra support when you start doing activities for the first three months. We recommend these compression bras for the first few weeks.

You should avoid underwire bras for at least six weeks. You may have some numbness and hypersensitivity of the breast. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least two weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

3-
Possible Risks

While breast augmentation surgery can yield beautiful results, it’s essential to be informed of potential risks and complications.

These can include bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. Capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue forms around the implant and tightens, may occur. Implants may also rupture or leak, leading to additional surgery. In rare cases, asymmetry, wrinkling, or rippling of the breasts may develop.

To minimize these risks, it’s crucial to choose a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon whom you trust, follow post-operative care instructions diligently, and communicate openly about any concerns throughout the process.

At Quintessa, it is rare to see the above risks in our patients. Dr. Butz and Dr. Thayer’s education, training, and experience allow them to minimize these risks and deliver beautiful results.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a suitable candidate for breast augmentation?

If you have fully developed breasts, are in good physical health, and want to increase the size of your breasts, correct asymmetry, or restore volume lost because of aging, pregnancy, or weight variations, you might be a good candidate for breast augmentation. To guarantee adequate healing, ideal candidates are either non-smokers or willing to give up smoking both before and after surgery.

It’s also critical to be emotionally ready and have reasonable expectations for the outcome. People who have untreated illnesses or long-term medical issues might not be eligible. To find out if breast augmentation fits your objectives and health profile, speak with one of our skilled surgeons.

At Quintessa Aesthetic Center, we offer a variety of breast implants to suit individual preferences and goals. There are a number of different options to consider when choosing your breast implant. We are most commonly using the newest “gummy bear”, cohesive gel implants but all your options will be reviewed with you at your consultation.

A few things to think about while selecting an implant include the ideal size, shape, and feel. In order to determine the ideal implant size for you, Dr. Butz and Dr. Thayer will evaluate your particular circumstances during your consultation and let you try out several sizes utilizing our Crisalix 3D simulation software.

Although breast augmentation is extremely safe, there are some possible risks, such as bleeding, anesthesia-related side effects, scarring, and altered breast or nipple sensation. Another possibility is capsular contracture, in which scar tissue tightens and grows around the implant. To make an informed choice, you must go over these risks with your surgeon during the appointment.

Preparation involves a thorough consultation with Dr. Butz or Dr. Thayer to discuss your goals and expectations. You’ll undergo a medical evaluation, and specific instructions will be provided, such as avoiding certain medications and ceasing smoking. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle before surgery can also aid in recovery.

Recovery varies among individuals, but generally:

  • First few days: Expect swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain medication may be prescribed.
  • First week: Many patients return to non-strenuous activities.
  • 2 weeks: Avoid rigorous exercise; light activities can resume.
  • 4-6 weeks: You can resume most usual activities, but follow your surgeon’s advice.

Adhering to post-operative care instructions is crucial for optimal healing.

Implants are not lifetime devices. While many last for 10-20 years, some may need replacement sooner due to factors like rupture or capsular contracture. Regular check-ups with your surgeon will help you monitor implant integrity.

During your consultation at Quintessa, you’ll meet with Dr. Butz or Dr. Thayer to discuss your specific needs and goals. They will provide comprehensive information about the procedure, assess your situation, and allow you to test different sizes with our Crisalix software to find the perfect match for you.

Yes, one alternative is breast augmentation with fat transfer, which involves liposuction to remove fat from one part of your body—such as the belly, flanks, back, or thighs—and injecting it into the breasts. This method is ideal for those seeking a modest increase in breast size and leverages your body’s natural fat, potentially offering a more natural aesthetic.
