Breast Augmentation Surgery: What to Expect, How to Prepare & How to Recover
Do breast implants feel natural?
- Yes, we typically use "gummy bear" implants that look and feel quite natural
- Recovery is often as quick as 5-7 days
Breast Augmentation Overview
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Women may desire breast augmentation to achieve a more feminine contour or restore volume loss related to age and breastfeeding. There are several different incision and implants that can be utilized to accomplish your goals. You can also use your own fat tissue in the form of fat grafting and avoid using implants all together. Dr. Daniel Butz offers both saline and silicone implants and will help you determine what will give you the look you’re looking for.
Am i a good candidate?
Ideal candidates are healthy women who desire improvements in the following:
- Small breasts, micromastia
- Breast volume loss related to having children
- Tubular breast deformity
- Breast asymmetry
- Breast Ptosis
During the consultation process, you will meet with Dr. Butz who will provide you with all the information you’ll need to consider during this procedure, listening carefully to your specific needs. He will then assess your unique situation and allow you to test different implant sizes in order to find the perfect match for you.
During the surgery, our surgeons may use an inframammary fold incision (an incision along the lower part of the breast). This 1.75 inch incision will hide within the natural fold, allowing the scar to hide naturally.
With the expertise of Dr. Butz, we will ensure the procedure meets your goals as closely as possible.
preparing for your procedure
As with any procedure, you should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.
There are several different techniques and options available for breast augmentation. Our doctors will discuss your goals and preferences and help you decide what the best option is for you.
There are two main categories of breast implants, Saline and Silicone.
- Silicone implants come in several different varieties depending on how “cohesive” they are. Sometimes people refer to the highly cohesive implants as the “Gummy Bear” implants. Silicone implants tend to feel and look more natural but are more expensive and more difficult to detect rupture.
- Saline implants are filled with saline (saltwater) at the time of the surgery and can be tailored more specifically. However, saline tend to be firmer and require more breast tissue to ensure they appear natural.
There are two commonly used incision site options, peri-areolar and inframammary fold. Both incisions can be used to place the implant above or below the muscle.
Recovery & Postoperative planning
After the the breast augmentation procedure you can expect to take pain medicine for 1-2 days and the over the counter pain relievers for another 1-2 days. However, some patients may need no pain medicine at all.
It is normal to feel a slightly uncomfortable sense of tightness or swelling around the breast area, but most patients report that this feeling goes away within a week.
A dressing will be in place when you wake up and this will be removed by your doctor the following day in clinic. You will then be placed in a soft bra. You should avoid underwire bras for at least 4 weeks. You may have some numbness and hypersensitivity of the breast. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.
Recovery Time: 5-7 days

Breast Augmentation Recovery: What can I expect?
Breast augmentation recovery can vary significantly depending on your surgeon's post operative restrictions. It's always best to discuss these restrictions with your surgeon so you can follow their instructions and optimize your results. The traditional recovery approach is to minimize arm movements and lifting for 4-6 weeks. However, there are studies suggesting it's beneficial to stretch and use the pectoral muscle in a controlled fashion. Most patients can go to work after 2 days, but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be limited until 4 weeks following your breast augmentation. From there, patients can slowly resume previous activities. Showering is OK the day after surgery and pain medications are typically only necessary for the first 2-3 days. Scars will fade over the course of a year and there are certain massage techniques that can help soften them faster. We do the best we can to ensure scars are well hidden and not bothersome.
How do you sleep after breast augmentation?
The main goal during the first few weeks after breast augmentation is to avoid putting pressure on the implants for extended periods of time. We want to prevent the implants from being pushed down and out, which can result in bottoming out and lateralized breast. That said, we typically ask patients to sleep on their back as much as possible for the first 4-6 weeks. Sleeping on your side is okay after the first 2 weeks and sleeping on your stomach is never a good idea, with or without implants.
How long does breast augmentation swelling last?
Tissue swelling after breast augmentation can take 6-8 weeks to resolve. In some cases, there is still some subtle swelling that may take an additional month or two to settle.Read More
