Breast Augmentation Overview
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Women may desire breast augmentation to achieve a more feminine contour or restore volume loss related to age and breastfeeding. There are several different incision and implants that can be utilized to accomplish your goals. You can also use your own fat tissue in the form of fat grafting and avoid using implants all together. Dr. Butz and Dr. Maida Parkins offer both saline and silicone implants and will help you determine what will give you the look you’re looking for.
Am i a good candidate?
Ideal candidates are healthy women who desire improvements in the following:
- Small breast, micromastia
- Breast volume loss related to having children
- Tubular breast deformity
- Breast asymmetry
- Breast Ptosis
During the consultation process, you will meet with one of our expert plastic surgeons: Dr. Daniel Butz or the board-certified Dr. Maida Parkins. Our doctors will provide you with all the information you’ll need to consider during this procedure, listening carefully to your specific needs. They will then assess your unique situation and allow you to test different implant sizes in order to find the perfect match for you.
During the surgery, our surgeons may use an inframammary fold incision (an incision along the lower part of the breast). This 1.75 inch incision will hide within the natural fold, allowing the scar to hide naturally.
With the expertise of Dr. Parkins and Dr. Butz, we will ensure the procedure meets your goals as closely as possible.
preparing for your procedure
As with any procedure, you should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to decrease your risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your Doctor prior to stopping medications.
There are several different techniques and options available for breast augmentation. Our doctors will discuss your goals and preferences and help you decide what the best option is for you.
There are two main categories of breast implants, Saline and Silicone.
- Silicone implants come in several different varieties depending on how “cohesive” they are. Sometimes people refer to the highly cohesive implants as the “Gummy Bear” implants. Silicone implants tend to feel and look more natural but are more expensive and more difficult to detect rupture.
- Saline implants are filled with saline (saltwater) at the time of the surgery and can be tailored more specifically. However, saline tend to be firmer and require more breast tissue to ensure they appear natural.
There are two commonly used incision site options, peri-areolar and inframammary fold. Both incisions can be used to place the implant above or below the muscle.
Recovery & Postoperative planning
After the the breast augmentation procedure you can expect to take pain medicine for 1-2 days and the over the counter pain relievers for another 1-2 days. However, some patients may need no pain medicine at all.
It is normal to feel a slightly uncomfortable sense of tightness or swelling around the breast area, but most patients report that this feeling goes away within a week.
A dressing will be in place when you wake up and this will be removed by your doctor the following day in clinic. You will then be placed in a soft bra. You should avoid underwire bras for at least 4 weeks. You may have some numbness and hypersensitivity of the breast. This is normal and will improve with time. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.
Recovery Time: 5-7 days
types of Breast Augmentation
Aside from the standard breast augmentation surgery described above, Quintessa also provides the following combination procedures:
The breast augmentation with lift procedure is the perfect enhancement for sagging breasts and patients looking to treat low natural nipple placement. In addition, we also provide a fat transfer breast augmentation procedure which is a popular choice among patients who are on the thinner side or have a smaller amount of natural soft tissue around the breast area.

What is recovery like? What can I expect?
It is important to prepare yourself for what to expect after surgery. Breast augmentation recovery time is dependent on where your implant is placed: submuscular vs. subglandular. The vast majority of my breast augmentations are submuscular, so I will speak to the recovery for that. Of course, time off work depends on the type of work that you do. At minimum, I recommend patients take 3-4 days off work to recover from general anesthesia. Realistically, if they have a desk job or the ability to work from home, my patients could have surgery on a Thursday and return to work on a Monday. After a submuscular breast augmentation, I enforce a lifting restriction of nothing heavier than 10 lbs for 4 weeks. Keep in mind, 10 lbs is about as heavy as a gallon of milk. I also encourage my patients to keep their arms (from elbow to wrist) below shoulder height for 2-4 weeks. As far as scar healing, the scars begin to fade around 3 to 6 months with the final result being closer to one year. At Quintessa, we provide you with silicone scar cream and instructions on scar massage which you begin at 3 weeks post-op. How do you achieve a natural look with breast augmentation?
In general, using a lower profile implant and keeping the size smaller as well as placing the implants beneath the muscle will help achieve a more natural look. Meeting with a board certified plastic surgeon and expressing your desired look will help you achieve the most satisfying results.
Can I wear a bra after my breast augmentation? If so, what type of bra should I buy?
Every surgeon has his or her own protocol for when you can wear a bra after surgery. For my patients, I have them wear a surgical bra for 4 weeks post-op, then they can wear any type of bra they like. I ask my patients not to participate in high-impact activities (running, zumba, etc) for 4 weeks post-op. They can, however, participate in lower impact sports and activities prior to that.
