Why cheek implants

Fat pads that give the cheeks definition can move, flatten, and even disappear with age, creating a bony appearance that enhances the look of wrinkles and lines. Patients who have thin, flat cheeks or a sunken appearance can benefit from a cheek augmentation. Cheek implants add definition to the cheek area, while balancing other facial features for a more youthful appearance.

The cheek augmentation procedure

During your consultation, Dr. Campbell or Dr. Daniel Butz will examine the cheek area and choose the correct size of cheek implants for the look you desire. Often times, the final sizing of the implants will be done in the operating room using “sizers." This allows our doctors to determine which size implant provides the most desirable enhancement.

During cheek augmentation surgery, incisions are placed in the mouth above the upper teeth. The cheek implants are placed over the bony portion of the cheek and are frequently secured with a tiny dissolvable screw.

Cheek implant recovery & results

Recovery for augmentation with cheek implants at Quintessa is typically mild. As with chin augmentation, slight swelling can last several weeks to several months. This can make the cheeks look over-augmented, but downtime is typically less than one week.

The fuller, more youthful appearance of the cheek area and overall facial contours created by cheek implants is visible immediately after surgery and the results last a lifetime. Due to swelling, final results may not be visible for several months after the surgery.

Cheek Implant FAQs

What's the difference between cheek implants and cheek injections?

Implants are a great way to add definition to your cheeks and are a permanent way to provide more volume to this area.  Other options would include injectable fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm or even Radiesse for a significant, yet temporary answer to this problem.  Some patients will decide to do injectable treatments to see if they like the result and if they do, they will then opt for a more permanent surgical cheek implant augmentation. You can read more in our Cheek Injections vs Implants blog.
