Achieve Symmetrical Ears

Ear Pinning

Prominent ears are a common source of bullying during childhood and can impact a young child’s self-esteem and body image. Confidence and self-esteem are important, though, and ears can be also shaped and reduced to improve their appearance or provide balance to other facial features.

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, can bring balance to the face and create a pleasing look for misshaped or disproportionate ears.

Our internationally renowned, double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Campbell, performs otoplasty on hundreds of patients in Southeastern Wisconsin.

This procedure is relatively common and the Quintessa team can create a look that will fit with the rest of the face and help improve your confidence.

Why Ear Pinning

Unlike the majority of facial plastic surgery, which is performed on adults, otoplasty is also commonly performed on children. The cartilage is most easily sculpted between the ages of four, when the ears are almost fully grown, and 14. Our surgeons frequently perform otoplasty surgery on both children and adults in the office using local anesthetic.

Our Two Step Process

1-
Personalized Otoplasty Planning with Dr. Campbell

During your consultation, Dr. Campbell will examine the external and internal ear structures to create a plan exclusively to you. Your doctor will then determine if otoplasty can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, or if it will need to be performed in the Surgical Center.

2-
How Otoplasty Creates a Natural, Balanced Look

During the procedure, our doctors will make small incisions that are hidden on the backside of the ear in the natural crease. Cartilage is exposed, then cut and molded to create a more pleasing appearance. The skin and cartilage is then held in place with sutures.

Ear Pinning Recovery and Results

Our doctors will place a large, soft dressing around the ears following surgery. This dressing can then be removed the next day and the patient can resume normal activities. However, patients are asked to wear a protective headband over the ears while sleeping for the first few nights. A small amount of bruising and swelling is common but usually subsides within seven to ten days. There may be some numbness of the ear but this will return with time. Head elevation and icing can help minimize bruising and swelling. Most people have minimal pain. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Patients emerge from otoplasty surgery with ears that are more proportionate to their facial features, creating an overall more pleasing appearance. Otoplasty results last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a suitable candidate for otoplasty?

Ideal candidates for otoplasty include individuals who:

  • Are self-conscious about protruding or misshapen ears.
  • Are in good overall health.
  • Children as young as five, whose ears have fully developed, can undergo the procedure to prevent potential teasing or self-esteem issues.

Otoplasty typically involves:

  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is administered for comfort.
  • Incisions: Small incisions are made behind the ear to access the cartilage.
  • Reshaping: The ear cartilage is reshaped and repositioned closer to the head to achieve the desired appearance.
  • Closure: Incisions are closed with sutures.
  • The procedure generally takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity.

Post-operative recovery includes:

  • Dressings: A headband or bandages are applied to support the new ear position during initial healing.
  • Discomfort: Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common and can be managed with prescribed pain medication.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and contact sports for several weeks.
  • Follow-Up: Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing progress.

Most individuals can return to work or school within a week, with full recovery in about 4 to 6 weeks.

Otoplasty can be performed on individuals of almost any age once the ears have fully developed. This typically occurs by the age of 5 or 6, making childhood an ideal time for the procedure. Early intervention can prevent potential self-esteem issues and teasing during formative years.

For adults and teenagers, otoplasty remains highly effective, as the procedure is not limited by age. The cartilage in adults may be less pliable than in children, but skilled surgeons can still achieve excellent results. Whether for a child or an adult, a consultation with a qualified surgeon at Quintessa can determine the best timing based on individual needs and goals.
