Smoother Skin, Fewer Scars

My Quintessa

Scar Revision overview

Facial scars can leave permanent reminders of past trauma, cancer or adolescent acne. Once a scar is created it is impossible to remove it without creating a new incision and a subsequent scar. However, there are scar revision techniques to improve scar appearance and to make them less noticeable to the casual observer. Laser resurfacing can also be used to smooth out raised edges and help with pigmentation differences. Our doctors have experience with a geometric broken line and other scar revision techniques to help people see you and not your scar.

Our Two Step Process

1-
Am I a good candidate for Scar Revision?

Ideal scar revision candidates are healthy men and women who desire improvements in the following:

  • Hypopigmented scars
  • Depressed scars
  • Scars crossing facial units
2-
Preparing for your procedure

You should stop any medication or supplements that are not essential for 10-14 days prior to your scar revision treatment to decrease the risk of bleeding complications. Please refer to your list of medications to avoid and always check with your doctor prior to stopping medications.

3-
Our technique

Scar revision may involve several stages. The primary stage includes excision of the old scar and reorienting the scar to be less noticeable. Our doctors will close the incision in multiple layers to ensure it heals with as fine of a line as possible. If a second stage is necessary, this may involve laser resurfacing to smooth out any transitions and pigmentation differences.

SURGICAL SOLUTIONS

Scar Revision aftercare

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in the office. You may have some bruising and swelling that will subside in 24-72 hours. Head elevation and icing can help minimize bruising and swelling. Most people have minimal pain. You should avoid rigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks but we encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What types of scars can be treated with scar revision techniques?

At Quintessa, we offer treatments for a wide range of scars, including hypopigmented scars (lighter than the surrounding skin), depressed scars, and scars that cross facial units. Our experienced surgeons, such as Dr. Daniel Butz and Dr. Jacob Thayer, utilize advanced techniques to improve the texture and appearance of these scars, making them less noticeable

The procedure typically involves excising the old scar and reorienting it to be less conspicuous. Our surgeons close the incision in multiple layers to promote optimal healing. If necessary, a second stage may include laser resurfacing to smooth transitions and address pigmentation differences. The entire procedure usually lasts one or two hours, depending on the scar’s complexity.

Preparation involves discontinuing any non-essential medications or supplements 10-14 days prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of bleeding complications. It’s essential to consult with your doctor before stopping any medications. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following pre-operative instructions provided by your surgeon will aid in optimal recovery.

Scar revision can be effective for hypertrophic scars, which are raised but remain within the boundaries of the original wound. However, keloid scars, which extend beyond the original wound edges, may require a combination of treatments, including surgical excision, corticosteroid injections, or other therapies. A consultation with our specialists will determine the most appropriate approach for your specific scar type.

It’s advisable to wait until a scar has fully matured before considering revision, which typically takes about 6 to 12 months. This waiting period allows the scar to settle and fade naturally, providing a clearer assessment of the necessary intervention. Early consultation with our team can help plan the optimal timing for your scar revision procedure.
