Let us help you embrace a new era of confidence with this rejuvenation journey at Quintessa.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
Pregnancy, weight gain and loss, and other life changes can stretch your abdominal muscles and skin, which can result in stretch marks and loose skin, and sometimes abdominal fullness. The tummy tuck gives you back the sculpted body you once treasured.
A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that targets multiple areas of concern at the same time.
The tummy tuck procedure involves:
- removing the loose abdominal skin and fat
- using liposuction to contour the flanks
- tighten the muscles to restore your core muscle strength
The end result of a tummy tuck is an aesthetically pleasing, contoured body. Quintessa is proud of being one of the first surgery centers in Wisconsin to offer a drainless tummy tuck, making your recovery so much easier.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
What Makes Someone an Ideal Tummy Tuck Candidate?
Healthy men and women who suffer from the following issues are likely to be good candidates for a tummy tuck:
- Excess abdominal fat
- Excess skin after weight loss
- Abdominal wall diastasis from pregnancy
- Stretch marks
- Unfavorable shape or contour
Some patients meeting these qualifications may prefer a more involved series of procedures called a “Mommy Makeover,” which involves 360 Liposuction and a buttocks lift.
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
Preparing for Your Procedure
Preparing for your tummy tuck is similar to preparing for other surgical procedures. Any non-essential supplements and medication should be stopped 10-14 days before your procedure, as this decreases the risk of bleeding complications.
Your surgeon will help you identify which medications should be stopped before your surgery. It is important to disclose all of your medications and supplements to your surgeon during your consultation period.
Abdominoplasty Technique
During your consultation, we will go over the process with you and answer all of your questions.
On surgery day, Dr. Butz will determine where to make the incision based on your anatomy and how much excess skin and fat tissue you have. To keep the line hidden after you recover, he will make the incision below your underwear line.
The surgical team will use liposuction to address excess fat in the flanks and create a beautiful abdominal contour. Additionally, “360 liposuction” is usually performed to address the back contour.
Drainless Technique & Lowered Risks
As a plastic surgery leader in Wisconsin, Quintessa uses the drainless tummy tuck technique. When we combine a traditional tummy tuck with muscle repair and liposuction, we use a special suturing technique that eliminates the previously necessary post-surgical drains.
The drainless technique provides all of the benefits of a traditional tummy tuck, but it gives you a much easier recovery. It’s also a less risky procedure, reducing the risks of:
- Infection
- Fluid collection/seromas
- Long recovery times
- Excess scarring
Mini Tummy Tuck
Monsplasty, also called a mini tummy tuck, is a procedure that removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the fat pad over the pubic bone. Leaner patients with minimal loose skin are ideal candidates for this procedure, which requires less time in surgery. Your surgeon at Quintessa can help you determine if you qualify for this process.
Scarring After Tummy Tuck Surgery
Understandably, patients have a lot of questions about scarring. Will the surgery leave a noticeable scar? Where will it be placed? Our surgeons are aware of these concerns and will make the incision as small as possible to complete the procedure.
Some patients may be candidates for a short scar abdominoplasty (mini tummy tuck). Regardless of which procedure you undergo, Dr. Butz will carefully close the incision and make sure the scar is hidden below your underwear line.
Recovery After Your Tummy Tuck Surgery
For the first 6-8 weeks, you will wear a compression garment. Although we always prefer to use a drainless method, some patients do require two drains to be placed to reduce swelling. Your surgeon will help you with the instructions for caring for these drains.
It is normal to experience some numbness, tightness, and pulling of your abdomen for several weeks to months. This will improve with time.
Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks after the procedure, and do not lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk in that same time frame. If you have small children, you will likely need someone to help so that you can avoid lifting, reaching, crawling, and bending.
It is always a good idea to get up and walk around several times a day, even right after your surgery.

Tummy Tuck FAQs
For patients with extra pockets of fat but without stretch marks, stretched muscle, or loose skin, liposuction may be a great option.
Patients who have been diagnosed with rectus diastasis, and those who have excess skin or stretch marks, will typically be advised to get a tummy tuck. However, Dr. Butz can perform liposuction with a tummy tuck for the ideal shaping and contouring.
It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not designed for weight loss. Rather, it is a sculpting procedure. That said, you can expect to lose 3-5 pounds of excess fat during the surgery, dependent upon your specific situation. Ask your surgeon how much weight you should expect to lose.
A tummy tuck typically costs between $10,000 and $14,000. The cost differs based on each individual’s needs. This surgery targets multiple areas of concern, including the entire abdomen, repairing the abdominal muscles, and the removal of excess skin. This improves the body’s contour.
Most patients plan to take 10-14 days off work to recover from this abdominal surgery.
The results from a tummy tuck are long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight and general fitness level. The abdominal skin and muscles that are tightened during the procedure should retain their improved contour for many years.
We hear this question a lot, but there is no strict age cut-off for tummy tuck surgery. More important than chronological age is being in generally good health. Many patients in their 50s, 60s, and older have tummy tucks after reaching their goal weight following major weight loss.
A tummy tuck can remove many existing stretch marks located below the belly button. However, it will not prevent new stretch marks from forming or remove stretch marks located above the belly button incision line.
It’s advisable to wait at least 6 months after giving birth before having a tummy tuck. This allows the post-pregnancy body ample time to stabilize and the abdominal muscles to recover as much as possible from the stretching of pregnancy.
