Liposuction procedure
Liposuction requires small incisions to safely remove unwanted fat. Dr. Butz will hide these incisions carefully to minimize scarring. Our doctors will discuss the details of the procedure with you during the consultation.
By removing unwanted fat and sculpting your body you can achieve a firmer and leaner silhouette. Removed fat from liposuction can also be processed and placed in areas that may need it! The most common areas for fat transfer surgery are the breast, buttocks and face.
Liposuction is frequently combined with the following procedures:
A stable diet and exercise regimen is recommended to be in place prior to having any liposuction performed. It is best to be at a stable healthy weight.
Who is an ideal candidate for Liposuction?
Ideal candidates, for liposuction, include healthy men and women who desire improvements in the following areas:
- Excess abdominal fat
- Improved abdominal contour
While patients don’t need to weigh a certain amount in order to be a good candidate for liposuction, he or she should be no more than 20-30 pounds above their ideal weight for best results.
Which Liposuction treatment is best?
Submental Liposuction for chin & jowls
Neck fullness and double chins related to extra fat under the chin can be a troublesome area for many people. It is commonly related to genetics and resistance to diet and exercise.
Fortunately, chin and jowl fat can be easily removed with the submental liposuction technique. With this technique, patients can expect the following:
- Dramatically improved profile view and jawline
- Skin redraping that leads to a longer-lasting result
If there is severe skin laxity or redundancy, a neck lift may be more appropriate to give you the results you’re looking for.
Newer injectable products, such as Kybella, can be effective for minor fat deposits but liposuction is still the gold standard and produces a more dramatic effect.
Power Assisted Liposuction
Power-assisted liposuction or PALS uses specialized devices to help fibrous fat more efficiently. This is typically performed under general anesthesia and can provide more dramatic fat reduction and results. Some patients may be a candidate for “high definition” liposuction, which helps create more dramatic contours and shadows.
Aside from great results, key benefits of PALS technique include:
- No pain during the procedure
- More aggressive volume reduction
- High definition results
Our board-certified surgeons will help you determine which liposuction technique is best suited to achieve your desired results.
Tumescent Liposuction
What makes this liposuction technique distinct from others is that it is performed in the office with only the use of local anesthesia to reduce pain and overall risk during surgery. Traditional liposuction uses tumescent fluid but also utilizes general anesthesia.
Aside from great results, key benefits of tumescent liposuction include:
- No general anesthesia
- Typically less invasive
Our board-certified surgeons will help you determine which liposuction technique is best suited to achieve your desired results.
How long is recovery for Liposuction?
Liposuction recovery can vary depending on the treatment area and the type of liposuction technique we choose to use.
For most patients, a compression garment will be in place for the first 6-8 weeks after the procedure. You may have some numbness and swelling in the treatment area for several weeks to months. This is normal and will improve with time.
You should avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. We always encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Liposuction FAQs
The recovery times are considerably different for traditional liposuction and non-invasive options. You might experience some redness or swelling after Vanquish, but you’ll be able to get back to your regular activities immediately. The same is true of fat-freezing procedures such as CoolSculpting. Liposuction is a great option for patients who have extra pockets of fat with good skin quality (no stretch marks, no loose skin) and no stretched muscle.
For patients with excess skin and loose abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis), a tummy tuck would be the procedure of choice. Liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck to remove fat as well. However, liposuction alone will not address extra skin and stretched muscles.
