Liposuction can enhance body contours and boost self-confidence.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that improves the contours of your body by removing excess fat from trouble areas. It’s a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that shapes your body so that what you see in the mirror matches who you know yourself to be.

When stubborn fat deposits are unaffected by diet, exercise, and other methods, liposuction may be the perfect solution.

Liposuction can be used to treat many parts of the body, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Back
  • Lateral breast
  • Arms
  • Under the chin
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms

It can also be combined with other procedures to target multiple areas at once. It is almost always included as part of a Mommy Makeover, and many people choose to undergo liposuction at the same time as breast augmentation surgery.

Liposuction procedure

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that gently removes unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. During the procedure, a physician first administers medication to help you feel comfortable, which may include local anesthesia (numbing just the treatment area) or general anesthesia (putting you to sleep).

The surgeon then makes tiny openings in the skin, typically just a few millimeters long. Through these small openings, they insert a thin tube called a cannula. This slender tube is moved back and forth to loosen the fat cells, which are then carefully suctioned away using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

After the procedure, you’ll wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support the healing tissues. Recovery varies from person to person, but most people can return to light activities within a few days, though complete healing takes several weeks as your body adjusts to its new contours.

Liposuction is often combined with the following procedures:

A stable diet and exercise regimen is recommended prior to having any liposuction performed. It is best to be at a stable, healthy weight.

Which Liposuction treatment is best?

Submental Liposuction for chin & jowls

Neck fullness and double chins related to extra fat under the chin can be a troublesome area for many people. It is commonly related to genetics and resistance to diet and exercise.

Fortunately, chin and jowl fat can be easily removed with the submental liposuction technique. With this technique, patients can expect the following:

  • Dramatically improved profile view and jawline
  • Skin redraping that leads to a longer-lasting result

If there is severe skin laxity or redundancy, a neck lift may be more appropriate to give you the results you’re looking for.

Newer injectable products, such as Kybella, can be effective for minor fat deposits but liposuction is still the gold standard and produces a more dramatic effect.

Power Assisted Liposuction

Power-assisted liposuction or PALS uses specialized devices to help fibrous fat more efficiently. This is typically performed under general anesthesia and can provide more dramatic fat reduction and results. Some patients may be a candidate for “high definition” liposuction, which helps create more dramatic contours and shadows.

Aside from great results, key benefits of PALS technique include:

  • No pain during the procedure
  • More aggressive volume reduction
  • High definition results

Our board-certified surgeons will help you determine which liposuction technique is best suited to achieve your desired results.

Tumescent Liposuction

What makes this liposuction technique distinct from others is that it is performed in the office with only the use of local anesthesia to reduce pain and overall risk during surgery. Traditional liposuction uses tumescent fluid but also utilizes general anesthesia.

Aside from great results, key benefits of tumescent liposuction include:

  • No general anesthesia
  • Typically less invasive

Our board-certified surgeons will help you determine which liposuction technique is best suited to achieve your desired results.

How Long is Recovery for Liposuction?

Liposuction recovery can vary depending on the treatment area and the type of liposuction technique we choose to use.

For most patients, a compression garment will be in place for the first 6-8 weeks after the procedure. You may have some numbness and swelling in the treatment area for several weeks to months. This is normal and will improve with time.

You should avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 weeks and avoid lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk. We always encourage you to be up and walking several times throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Am I a suitable candidate for liposuction?

Liposuction is ideal for you if you are close to your target weight but struggle with localized fat deposits – which are diet and exercise resistant. It’s important to have good skin elasticity and muscle tone, as liposuction targets fat but doesn’t address excess skin or muscle laxity. A stable diet and exercise regimen is recommended prior to having any liposuction performed.

Liposuction can effectively target various areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, neck, and face. At Quintessa, we also offer facial liposuction to address excess fullness in areas like the chin and jawline, enhancing facial contours.

The operation begins with small, strategic incisions through which a cannula is inserted to suction out excess fat. Dr. Butz and Dr. Thayer meticulously conceal these incisions to reduce scarring. The removed fat can also be processed and deposited in places that require it, such as the breasts, buttocks, or face, using fat transfer surgery.

Recovery varies depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing rates. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas, which typically subside over time. Most patients can return to light activities within a few days and resume more strenuous activities after a few weeks, following the surgeon’s guidance.

The results of liposuction are long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. While the removed fat cells do not return, significant weight fluctuations can affect the overall outcome.

While any surgical procedure comes with potential risks, liposuction is a safe and well-established body contouring treatment when performed by an experienced professional. Complications such as infection, bleeding, asymmetry, or temporary changes in sensation are rare, especially when the procedure is done by a board-certified surgeon like Dr. Butz and Dr. Thayer. At Quintessa, we take every precaution to ensure your safety and comfort, from advanced surgical techniques to meticulous post-operative care. Our team will provide detailed instructions to support a smooth recovery and optimal results. Rest assured, you are in the hands of an expert, dedicated to delivering the best possible outcome with minimal risks.

Liposuction involves making small, strategically placed incisions to safely remove unwanted fat while sculpting and refining your body contours. Dr. Butz and Dr. Thayer take great care in placing these incisions in discreet areas, ensuring that any resulting scars are minimal and virtually unnoticeable over time. Additionally, with proper post-operative care, including keeping the incision sites clean and following recovery guidelines, scars will continue to fade. At Quintessa, we prioritize not just achieving outstanding body contouring results but also ensuring that your skin heals beautifully, leaving you with smooth, natural-looking enhancements. There’s no need to worry—our goal is to make your transformation as seamless as possible.

Yes, liposuction is frequently combined with other procedures to enhance overall results. Common combinations include breast augmentation, breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift, and Brazilian butt lift. Combining procedures can provide a more comprehensive transformation and may be discussed during your consultation. At Quintessa Aesthetic Center, our team is dedicated to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals with personalized care and advanced techniques. Schedule a consultation to explore how liposuction can enhance your natural beauty.
