Question: I had a scalp reduction surgery that, for the most part, I am happy with the results. However, there is a slight scar that mars my results. What therapy do you recommend to reduce the appearance of surgical scars?
Answer: If it is an immature scar, then I recommend aggressive massage, vitamin E gel, and sunblock. If the scar is beginning to hypertrophy or enlarge, then I would inject it with a dilute steroid solution to maximize the appearance of the scar. If the scar is already mature and the full healing process has already occurred, then I recommend treatments with the ProFractional laser by Sciton as we have had some phenomenal results in helping to camouflage existing surgical scars, acne scars, and chickenpox scars, as well as various traumatic scarring. Ultimately, a consultation by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon would be appropriate in order to create the customized treatment plan that would best suit your problem and needs.
