Laser hair removal is a safe and effective way of removing unwanted hair from the face and body. However, it is very important for people to make sure that they get this procedure done by a qualified professional. If laser hair removal is performed by an untrained person, then the patient will not get the results that he or she wants. Furthermore, patients who get this procedure done by someone who is not qualified could end up with burns and permanent scars.
For the best results, a person should see a dermatologist to get this treatment done. Dermatologists typically charge $500 per treatment. Below are five key questions that everyone should ask their dermatologist before they get laser hair removal:
How Many Lasers Are Used At This Clinic? Are the Lasers Owned or Rented?
If a doctor has access to a lot of lasers, then he or she will most likely select the right one for your skin tone and type. You should be wary of a doctor who uses rented machines because chances are, he or she only performs a few procedures each month.
What Type of Lasers Do You Use?
A good doctor should be able to describe the types of lasers that he uses. He or she should also tell you why a particular laser is right for your skin type and tone.
How Many Procedures Have You Performed?
An experienced doctor has performed at least 100 procedures.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The average person needs to get between four and six treatments.
Can You Treat Tanned Skin?
If the answer to that question is yes, then you should choose another doctor. Laser hair removal can cause burns if it is performed on tanned skin.
I think overall this article is good in that it provides people with information that is useful when looking at getting laser hair removal; however, there are a few issues that I have with it, one being whether the lasers are owned or rented. I think that is really a business decision since some may find that rented lasers are less expensive though I would change the actual wording to whether the lasers are owned or leased as really leasing may be an option for some businesses, but I do agree with the fact that if they rent them once a month for laser hair removal they certainly seem not to have any significant amount of experience with laser hair removal, so that would certainly concern me, but if it is rented several days a week or is a leased option that that certainly would not sway me from seeing that provider. The specific type of laser that is used I think is relatively critical since at the Quintessa Aesthetic Center we actually have three different lasers that can be used for laser hair removal and we have found that in certain circumstances when our specialized hair removal laser is having difficulty getting rid of some stubborn hairs that one of the other two laser modalities can clean things up. If we did not have these options then this patient may only get a moderate improvement as opposed to what the major of our patients get, which is very significant laser hair reduction. I also agree that the number of procedures that are performed is significant since there is a learning curve to laser hair removal and that if someone tells you they can clear your hair in a single treatment that this is a complete fallacy as the hair grows in different stages and we, therefore, always need multiple treatments and I would say at a minimum of six treatments for virtually any part of the body and frequently we may need to go up to eight treatments. Also, a good question to ask is whether they can treat tanned skin and in a nutshell, the answer is no, but we do have a laser that can theoretically be used on tanned skin though it is not going to be nearly as effective as the other two lasers that we currently have at the Quintessa Aesthetic Center.
