Question: I am 54, female, and I have extremely fine white hairs on my neck. Some get really long, over 2 inches. I would like to have laser hair removal of these fine hairs. Can this be accomplished in one day or does this type of hair removal require more visits?
Answer: Fine white hair is extraordinarily difficult to permanently reduce due to the fact that without any pigmentation in the hair the typical laser hair removal system cannot damage the hair follicle that creates the hair. There are other modalities for laser hair removal such a YAG laser which can be successful, but I always caution patients not to expect as significant of results as with the more standard diode or alexandrite laser hair removal systems. Furthermore virtually all laser hair removal procedures require multiple treatments due to the fact that the hair is only susceptible to the laser treatment during its growth phase and different hairs are in different phases at different times requiring multiple treatment sessions, typically somewhere between 6 and 8 treatments spaced about a month apart for facial or neck hair. I would recommend you seek out a provider that has extensive experience with laser hair removal and hopefully even experience treating fine white hairs such as yours.
