Question: What is the laser you use for laser resurfacing and why do you think it is superior to other types of lasers?
Answer: Currently I use an erbium laser for laser resurfacing due to its extreme efficiency at delivering energy into the skin. It is about 10 times more efficient at energy delivery than the older CO2 laser and therefore creates less surrounding thermal injury, less charring, and in my opinion, much less redness and risk of loss of pigmentation that the CO2 laser. When the erbium laser is used appropriately and aggressively I feel that I can get as much wrinkle reduction as a CO2 laser with less downtime and less risk of complication. Obviously each surgeon will have their preference, but at the time of this blog the erbium laser by Sciton is my favorite.
